Preventing Acne With Vitamins and Minerals

Your diet plays a not only a key role in your overall heath and well being, but in the health of your skin as well. A good diet with the proper nutrients (vitamins, minerals, etc) can result in smooth, shiny and blemish-free skin. Good diets can not only prevent breakouts, but treat current one's, though a good diet will take about 2 weeks before improvments begin to be seen.

Most acne prevention and treatment options focus on treating the skin at the surface level. While this is good for spot treatments, it does not tackle the actual problem. In order to truely treat and prevent acne and blemishes you need to treat the source of the problem...diet, health, etc.

Minerals can have an especially large impact on the health of your skin, and making sure to include these minerals in your diet or through supplementation can greatly reduce the chance of acne outbreaks, treat current acne and blemishes, and improve the overall health and vitality of your skin. Below we have outlined the top three minerals for skin health and why they are important.

1. SELENIUM Scientific research is showing that this mineral plays a key rolein skin cancer prevention. Taken in supplement form or in a cream,it even protects the skin from sun damage. If you do spend any time in the sun (who doesn't this time of year), selenium can help reduce your chance of burning which lowers your chance of developing of skin cancer. Here are some of the best sources of selenium which include whole-grain cereals, seafood, garlic, and eggs.

2. COPPER Here is another important mineral that is very important to skin health. Used together with vitamin C and the mineral zinc, copper helps to develop elastin, which are the fibers that support skin structure from underneath. While a copper deficiency is rare (doctors caution that supplementscan be dangerous), topical applications of copper-rich creams canfirm the skin and help restore some elasticity, according to somestudy results.

3. ZINC The third but most important mineral I want to discuss is Zinc, which can be very important to consider if you have acne breakouts. In fact, sometimes acne itself is a symptom of a zinc deficiency. Taken internally or used topically, zinc works to clear skin by taming oil production and may be effective in controlling the formation of acne lesions or help those already on your skin to clear sooner. Food sources of zinc include oysters, lean meat, and poultry. This is much safer that Accutane and it's dangerous side effects.

By making sure these three minerals are in your diet, it will support skin health in a multitude of ways. Using products that contain them can also be helpful, just make sure you know the other ingredients in the products you are using... you do not want to do more harm than good.
